How WeatherWeGo Works

From entering your route to getting a complete weather forecast for your journey — here's exactly how our weather-smart route planning works.

1

Enter Your Route

Start by entering your origin and destination. You can type any address, city name, or landmark — our autocomplete system will help you find the exact location. Choose from suggestions to ensure accurate routing.

For example, you might enter "Chicago, IL" as your origin and "Denver, CO" as your destination. The system supports addresses across the United States and works with everything from full street addresses to general city names.

Tip: Select a suggestion from the dropdown rather than typing a freeform address. This ensures we have exact coordinates for the most accurate route and weather calculations.

2

Set Your Departure Time

Choose your departure date and time. This is crucial because weather conditions are time-sensitive — the forecast for a Tuesday morning departure will be completely different from a Thursday evening departure along the same route.

Our system uses your departure time to calculate when you'll arrive at each point along your route, then fetches the weather forecast for those specific times. This means you see the actual conditions you'll encounter, not just a general forecast for the area.

For multi-day trips, you can also set a daily driving limit (in hours). This tells our system when you plan to stop for the night, so we can accurately forecast weather for each day of your journey separately.

3

We Calculate Your Route

Once you submit your route, our backend gets to work. Here's what happens behind the scenes:

  1. Route geometry — We calculate the optimal driving route between your origin and destination, including the full road path, distances, and estimated driving times for each segment.
  2. Waypoint generation — The route is divided into strategic waypoints at regular intervals. Each waypoint represents a location where we'll check weather conditions.
  3. Arrival time estimation — Based on your departure time and driving speed, we calculate your estimated arrival time at each waypoint. This accounts for road types and realistic travel speeds.
  4. Weather fetching — For each waypoint, we pull the forecast for the exact time you're expected to be there. This includes temperature, precipitation, wind, visibility, and any active weather alerts.
  5. Risk assessment — Our algorithm evaluates the weather at each waypoint and assigns a risk level (low, moderate, high, or severe) based on driving safety factors.
4

View Your Weather Timeline

Your results are presented in two synchronized views:

Interactive Map

Your route is drawn on a full-screen map with weather markers at each waypoint. The markers are color-coded by risk level — green for clear conditions, orange for moderate weather, and red for hazardous conditions. Click any marker to see detailed weather information for that location and time.

Weather Timeline

A chronological sidebar lists every waypoint with its weather conditions, temperature, wind speed, precipitation chance, and risk level. Scroll through the timeline to see how conditions change throughout your journey. Each entry shows the estimated time you'll pass through that location.

Make Informed Decisions

With your complete weather picture, you can make smarter travel decisions:

  • Adjust your departure time — Use the route editor to try different departure times and see how conditions change. Sometimes leaving just a few hours earlier or later can help you avoid a storm entirely.
  • Review departure time recommendations — Our system automatically analyzes nearby departure times and suggests the windows with the best overall weather conditions.
  • Plan for weather changes — If you see a stretch of heavy rain 200 miles into your trip, you can plan a rest stop or meal break at that point to wait it out.
  • Pack appropriately — Seeing the full range of temperatures and conditions along your route helps you pack the right clothing and gear.
  • Share with travel companions — Share your route via URL so everyone in your group can see the plan and weather expectations.
