Why this stretch is hard in winter

  • CDOT rebuilt the Gap between 2018 and November 2022 with truck climbing lanes near Monument Hill and the Greenland exit and a southbound truck chain-up station in Larkspur for chaining up before the climb over Monument Hill.
  • Ahead of the October 23, 2019 storm, CDOT forecast five to nine inches in the Gap, pretreated Monument Hill north to Castle Rock with brine, and warned of travel impacts including possible closures for Monument Hill.
  • NWS Boulder's summary of the February 5 to 7, 2020 storm describes heavy snow over the I-25 corridor from Denver south to the Palmer Divide, with 6 to 14 inches in the Denver metro area and up to 20 inches in the southern foothills.
  • The drive crosses two NWS offices: Boulder for Denver and Castle Rock, Pueblo for Monument and Colorado Springs. This page shows alerts from both.

Questions drivers ask about I-25

Does I-25 close at Monument Hill?
It can. CDOT's October 2019 advisory warned of possible closures for Monument Hill and the Gap and asked drivers to avoid the stretch overnight. Closures and lowered speed limits are posted on COtrip; this page shows the forecast for each stretch and active NWS warnings.
Why does Monument get snow when Denver does not?
Monument sits on the Palmer Divide, the ridge I-25 climbs between Castle Rock and Colorado Springs. NWS Boulder's February 2020 storm summary describes heavy snow from Denver south to the divide, and NWS Pueblo forecasts the Monument stretch as its own zone. Check the forecast for the hour you will cross the hill, not the Denver forecast.
Do I need chains or snow tires on I-25?
When CDOT activates the Traction Law, passenger vehicles need snow tires, mud and snow tires with adequate tread, chains or four-wheel drive; commercial vehicles chain up at the Larkspur station before the climb. CDOT's 2019 advisory told drivers to have adequate traction to meet the law.
