US-50 over Echo Summit: road conditions right now
Placerville, CA to South Lake Tahoe, CA
US-50 climbs the American River canyon from Placerville to Echo Summit, then drops down a cliffside grade into the Tahoe Basin and South Lake Tahoe. Caltrans puts the highway at about 7,200 feet near the summit, and its chain controls (R-1, R-2, R-3) apply on this stretch in storms.

Why this stretch is hard in winter
- Near the summit the road is squeezed between a rock cut on one side and a steep drop toward the Tahoe Basin on the other, so a single crash or slide can close both directions.
- Rock slides close it too: in March 2022 a boulder closed US-50 at Echo Summit in both directions, and Caltrans sent drivers to I-80 instead.
- During chain controls, Caltrans has cut the speed limit on US-50 to 25 mph.
- R-2 means chains or traction devices on everything except 4WD/AWD with snow-tread tires on all four wheels; R-3 means chains on all vehicles, no exceptions.

- Echo Summit or Donner Pass to Tahoe in snow?
- It depends on the storm and where you are going. Both are under Caltrans chain controls in storms. US-50 is a two-lane mountain highway near the summit, and I-80 is a divided interstate. Compare both on WeatherWeGo for the hour you would cross, and check Caltrans QuickMap.
